“Sonny grabbed Bieber and threw him in his washing machine. After one short cold wash cycle, he captured enough screams of agony to make something work”
SKRILLEX is one such artists that enjoyed immense success in must a short amount of time. As a brostep pioneer, many believe that his production success can be sourced to one famous plugin: Native Instruments ‘Massive.’
One anonymous A&R manager has revealed the REAL secret sauce to Skrillex’ success: a broken washing machine.
Brett Hedgewood, anonymous A&R manager: “So I went to his place when Sonny [Skrillex] was in the middle of working on a track. When I arrived he was not sitting behind his production laptop. In fact, he was not in his studio at all, but there was this XLR cable coming out from the studio all the way to the laundry room.
And there I saw Sonny with a microphone in front of this washing machine. At first I thought he was high, but once he let the washing machine roll, I immediately understood THIS was the secret sauce to Sonny’s success. I realized the washing machine was broken. The noise was unforgiving. It was squelchy, very very loud, brutally aggressive is perhaps the best explanation. All his basses, his drums, his wobbles, they all came from this one freakin broken washing machine.
You know, later on when Skrillex did that first collab with Justin Bieber, the first takes sounded really horrible. He thought the little brat had no talent, but since it would be such a money maker, Sonny grabbed Bieber and threw him in his washing machine. After one short cold wash cycle, he captured enough screams of agony to make something work. The rest is history.”
